Nous sommes fières d’annoncer notre participation à la 2e édition de Peinture extrême. En effet, la saison estivale 2013 sera marquée par la peinture à travers un circuit d’expositions proposées par vingt galeries d’art montréalaises. C’est sous le titre « L’objet peinture » que la Galerie Dominique Bouffard a réuni le travail de sept artistes peintres pour l’événement qui se déroulera du 5 juin au 21 juillet.

On définit habituellement le tableau d’un point de vue « classique » comme une surface rectangulaire sur laquelle l’artiste exprime une idée, un concept, bref, produit une image. Cette image crée alors une illusion, une percée vers un autre univers où l’idée artistique est transformée en proposition à deux dimensions. Le concept d’« objet peinture » questionne la tridimensionnalité de l’œuvre et interroge le regardeur par sa matérialité. L’œuvre d’art devient objet à part entière. L’artiste la conçoit en tenant compte de paramètres différents, que ce soit par l’addition d’objets, la modification de sa structure dite « classique » ou par la façon dont elle est présentée au regard. Alberto Burri et Lucio Fontana, qui perçaient ou brûlaient la surface de leurs œuvres, et Anselm Kiefer, qui les surchage d’objets composés de plomb ou de béton, sont de bons exemples d’artistes qui ont fait basculer l’idée traditionnelle d’illusion en entraînant l’œuvre dans une matérialité certaine et assumée.

Parmi les artistes participants, soulignons Isa B et Pascal Caputo, deux nouveaux venus à la galerie, Sébastian Maltais et Andrew Smith, exploitant tous deux des matériaux atypiques en peinture, Nicolas Ranellucci, qui était finaliste à la dernière édition du concours de peinture de la RBC, et finalement Sylvain Bouthillette et Louis Bouvier, deux artistes invités spécialement pour l’événement. C’est donc avec plaisir que nous convions collectionneurs et amateurs d’art à venir découvrir la peinture sous un autre angle au cours de la saison estivale. -30-

EXTREME PAINTING: PAINTING AS OBJECT

We are proud to announce we will be taking part in the 2nd edition of Peinture extrême. The summer of 2013 will be a season of painting, with a circuit of exhibitions on offer from twenty Montreal art galleries. Under the title “L’objet peinture”, Galerie Dominique Bouffard has gathered the work of seven painters for the event that will take place from June 5 to July 21.

A painting is usually defined from a “classical” standpoint as a rectangular surface on which the artist expresses an idea, a concept, in short: produces a picture. This picture then creates an illusion, a portal to another universe where the artistic idea turns into a two-dimensional offering. The concept of “painting as object” interrogates the work’s three-dimensional claims and the viewer’s gaze by its materiality.The artwork becomes a full-fledged object. The artist conceives it by taking into account a different set of parameters, whether it be by adding objects onto it, by modifying its so-called “classical” structure, or in the way it is offered to the gaze. Alberto Burri and Lucio Fontana, who pierced or burned the surface of their works, and Anselm Kiefer, who overloads them with objects cast in lead or cement, are good examples of artists who have turned the traditional idea of illusion on its head by taking the work in the direction of undoubted, acknowledged materiality.

Among participating artists, we may note Isa B and Pascal Caputo, two newcomers to the gallery, Sébastian Maltais and Andrew Smith, who both use atypical materials in painting, Nicolas Ranellucci, who was a finalist in the last edition of the RBC Canadian painting competition, and finally Sylvain Bouthillette and Louis Bouvier, two artists invited especially for this occasion.
