TOUCH ME
RICHARD MORIN / Painting - ANGELO BARSETTI / Photography
On September 7, 2011, in celebration of its 5th anniversary, Galerie Dominique Bouffard will launch an exhibition that pairs the recent paintings of Richard Morin and the new series of photographic works by Angelo Barsetti. Entitled TOUCH ME, the exhibit is a meeting of two very talented artists as well as the result of a long friendship. From their respective works emerges a common sensitivity. Despite the very different mediums used, their works come together in a surprising aesthetic and poetic symbiosis.
First, RICHARD MORIN offers five paintings marked by a profound nostalgia. TOUCH ME becomes a work on the memory, a voyage in time where the weight of absence is felt; absence of others, absence of memories. Nostalgia or childhood hurts are suggested by the solitary figures rendered in tones of grey. To support his idea, he paints on the vestiges of a workshop occupied several years ago, canvas tarps that covered the floor and absorbed traces of a difficult and passionate labour. Thus, the memory of the place substantiates the idea of the passage of time and the indelible marks it leaves on matter and in the soul.
For his part, ANGELO BARSETTI offers a series of atypical and theatrical portraits in which the presence of others is imposed. Barsettis characters do not suffer from solitude, but are rather confronted with a sharing or an invasion of an intimate space. In a pallet of tinted greys, the artist seeks to reveal the mysteries of these face-to-face encounters. As in the collection Jeux de vilains, some of the pairs in his portraits exude gentleness and complicity, while others suggest trouble and discomfort.
Both artists have collaborated on other projects in theatre, dance, and circus arts. RICHARD MORIN has been painting professionally since 1997. He was a finalist in the 2008 Kingston Prize, a trans-canada portrait contest. His works are scheduled to hang at the Florence Biennale of Contemporary Art in Italy at the end of 2011 and he is presently working on a large exterior mural to mark the 50th anniversary of Canadas National Theatre School where he studied scenography.
A make-up artist with a visual arts background, ANGELO BARSETTI is a popular collaborator in dance and theatre circles. He has worked with famous directors and choreographers like Wajdi Mouawad, Brigitte Haentjens, René-Richard Cyr, Denis Marleau and Stéphanie Jasmin, Louise Bédard and Sylvain Émard, to name but a few. Photography is becoming more and more important in his work as a creator. For several years now, his signature is on promotional images of theatre and dance companies, and in 2008, we saw some of his works exhibited at Usine C theatre in a corpus called Papillon noir.
