DEADWOOD
Solo Exhibition - ÉTIENNE LAFRANCE
Galerie Dominique Bouffard is pleased to present the work of this young artist recently expatriated to Berlin to perfect his art. " In his show Deadwood, Étienne Lafrance focuses on the symbolic structures in nature and the city, and exploits these charged images for Man. The singular and the universal merge in a dialogue where the artists landscape is testimony to the citys unique character.
This show establishes the city as the ultimate setting in a mystic, almost indescribable world and speaks to the infinite subtlety of all that lies outside of it. While nature, by definition changing, slippery and ephemeral, does not always marry well with the urban landscape, their meeting is always relevant. Étienne Lafrance succeeds in exposing the organic side of the city: the fruit of human imagination and labour, it is a tiny but essential part of the landscape.
Aside from uncovering the organic image of the city, Deadwood allows the artist to question the way nature exists even in the heart of urbanity. The taming, arranging or setting apart of green spaces are particularities in our cities that Étienne Lafrance paints with sensitivity and clarity, pointing to a certain excessive consumption of nature. Beyond this critique is a reflection on the way city-dwellers appropriate and beautify their environment in an unbalanced rapport between the need and the desire for natures presence, thus establishing Deadwoods relevance. For Étienne Lafrance, inner and outer realities provide food for thought, as do traces and memories of nature in our cities." 1
