SYLVAIN LESSARD - JEU DE PLANS (PLAY OF PLANES)
Anxious to bring attention to new talents and true to its quality standards for seven years already, Galerie Dominique Bouffard is happy to present the work of Montreal artist and architect Sylvain Lessard. Since graduating from Université de Montréal in 1997, Sylvain Lessard has developed a body of work mainly revolving around themes highlighting architectonic fragments of the human body.
“I am attempting to develop concepts whereby architecture is presented to us in an unusual guise.”
From a formal standpoint, his works offer variations on flowing shapes reminiscent of cells, of organic tissue or of complex architectural forms. At first glance, these motifs, webs or textures do not relate to a particular scale. They can be perceived as microscopic materials or as great ribs spreading out on the scale of buildings. The use of elements belonging to the idea of the landscape gives us clues about the proportion of certain structures.
Furthermore, when we take into account the titles of the works, we discover that shapes relating at first glance to anatomical notions come closer to ideas belonging to the world of architecture. Aiming to take the viewer on new paths, the titles are aptly chosen and can trigger a shift in how the works are read: dynamic curtain walls, super frames, the great skylights, etc.
“These architectonic fragments represent for me basic research, which can lead to new concepts on the scale of a city. From one fragment to the next, I am trying to look anew at lesser known notions of architecture that yet have just as great a place in one of man’s grand designs: the art of building.”
Sylvain Lessard’s work has mainly been shown through the network of the Maisons de la Culture and Montreal’s Artist-Run Centers.
