JUSTIN LALANCETTE - ÉPRIS DE TRAVERS
April 3 - May 5, 2013 / Opening April 3 - 6 pm
Justin Lalancette’s work is inspired by the culture of contemporary urban art. Graffiti, stencils, collages, drawings and paintings enter into the make-up of his works. Initially, wild postings, so-called “posting crusts”, were literally torn from city walls and integrated to works so as to enhance them with their worn textures. The artist now creates his own strata by using more personal material, be it in photography or in drawing, larding them with false imperfections. Everything is superimposed in manifold layers, in a play of opacity and transparency. This practice aims to give the illusion that time has altered the work, that several agents have had a hand in it.
Out of those dirty whites, characters emerge; sometimes accusing, sometimes anecdotal, the topics treated in these canvases confront the viewer. In his most recent series of works, Justin Lalancette explores the notion of intimacy bound up with social media and reality TV. An intimacy forever facing two diametrically opposed states such as freedom and constraint. Nevertheless, the artist does not impose a strict linear narrative, instead putting forward clues that allow the viewer to hammer out a personal interpretation of the work.
