 English Follows ANDREW SMITH Du 6 octobre au 6 novembre 2016 | Venissage 6 octobre, 17h Du 6 octobre au 6 novembre 2016, la Galerie Dominique Bouffard présente les œuvres récentes de l’artiste Andrew Smith dans une exposition intitulée «Puzzles for Portals». Poursuivant ses recherches en peinture, l’artiste ontarien propose une série d’œuvres sur toile qui engage le regard du spectateur dans des compositions denses où le geste et la rigueur sont mis à profit. Dans des tons plutôt froids, la pièce maîtresse de l’exposition, qui consiste en un large triptyque sur bois gravé, complète ce corpus sur toile aux harmonies audacieuses. Si l’exposition «Crossing Over» présentée en 2014 laissait déjà percevoir des éléments de cette nouvelle exploration structurelle, «Puzzles for Portals» propose une approche formelle plus approfondie. L’organisation fragmentée de la surface composée par un réseau de lignes et de formes irrégulières bien définies rivalise avec une gestuelle plus intuitive. L’effet de casse-tête ainsi créé par la cohabitation des formes sur différents plans permet d’entrevoir de nouvelles dimensions par un savant mélange d'ambiguïté et de précision.
Note biographique
Andrew Smith est titulaire d’un baccalauréat et d’une maîtrise en art visuel de l'Université d'Ottawa qui lui a octroyé le prix Michel Goulet pour la qualité exceptionnelle de sa thèse. Ses œuvres se retrouvent dans des collections privées et publiques telles que celles de RBC-DEXIA à Londres (R-U), du Ministère des Affaires Étrangères du Canada et de la collection de la Ville d’Ottawa. Andrew Smith vit et travaille à Ottawa et est représenté par la Galerie Dominique Bouffard à Montréal. Pursuing his research in painting, the Ontario artist proposes a series of works on canvas that engages the spectator’s gaze in dense compositions drawing on gesturality and rigour. In rather cold tones, the exhibition’s centerpiece, consisting in a wide triptych on engraved wood, completes this body of works on canvas in bold harmonies. If the exhibition Crossing Over shown in 2014 already contained some elements of this new structural exploration, Puzzles for Portals puts forward a more focused formal approach. The fragmented organization of the surface, made up of a network of well-defined lines and irregular shapes, competes with a more intuitive gesturality. The puzzle effect thus created by the cohabitation of shapes on different planes enables us to glimpse new dimensions through a clever mix of ambiguity and precision.
Biographical note
Andrew Smith holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts and a Masters of Fine Arts from the University of Ottawa where he received the Michel Goulet award for the exceptional quality of his thesis. His work can be found in private and public collections including RBC-DEXIA, London, U.K.; the Department of Foreign Affairs, Canada; and the City of Ottawa public art collection. Andrew Smith lives iin Ottawa and is represented by Galerie Dominique Bouffard in Montreal.
