La Galerie Dominique Bouffard est fière de présenter Latitude anthropique, la toute nouvelle exposition de Pascal Caputo. Mariant peinture et installation, l’artiste poursuit sa réflexion sur le phénomène de banalité lié à l'image identitaire.

Latitude anthropique prend pour assise la question du « soi » et sa représentation dans le contexte paradoxale des clichés climatiques. Dans cette nouvelle recherche, l’intérêt est focalisé sur le lieu de tension entre le désir d’une projection identitaire vers des lieux utopiques et l’appréhension d’une disparition de l’espèce humaine. Ce corpus donne suite à l’exposition After #us dans laquelle l’artiste s’appropriait des portraits photographiques de type « selfie de vacances » sur les réseaux sociaux et remplaçait les figures humaines par des espaces non-peints. Dans Latitude anthropique, les clichés prélevés sur le web proviennent de la même latitude géographique, mais les scènes apocalyptiques choisies sont porteuses de messages radicalement opposés. Le contraste et l’ambiguïté que peut susciter la coexistence d’images attractives de type « selfie » avec celles plus répulsives de catastrophes climatiques sont habilement représentés par différents dispositifs visuels dans une scénographie à la fois surprenante et angoissante.

Dans Latitude anthropique, l’idée d’une géographie idéale s’estompe et laisse place à celle du « sans issue ». Sans être prémonitoire, le vide laissé dans les tableaux interpelle le spectateur et s’offre comme une opportunité créatrice, à condition d’accepter l’inévitable inconfort qui l’accompagne.

Latitude anthropique 

Galerie Dominique Bouffard is proud to present Latitude anthropique, Pascal Caputo’s brand new exhibition. Joining painting and installation, the artist continues his reflection on the banality related to the identity image.

Latitude anthropique is based on the question of the “self” and its representation in the paradoxical context of climate pictures. In his new research, interest is focused on the point of tension between the desire for a projection of identity towards utopian places and apprehension of the disappearance of the human species. This body of work follows on the exhibition After #us, in which the artist appropriated photographic portraits of the “holiday selfie” type on social networks and replaced human figures by unpainted spaces. In Latitude anthropique, the sampled shots found on the web come from the same geographic latitude, but the apocalyptic scenes chosen bear radically opposite messages. The contrast and the ambiguity that can be generated by the coexistence of attractive, selfie-type images with more repulsive ones of climate catastrophes are cleverly represented by various visual arrangements in a staging that is both surprising and unsettling.

In Latitude anthropique, the idea of an ideal geography fades away and gives way to that of “no way out”. Without being prophetic, the vacuum left on the canvases challenges the viewer and appears as a creative opportunity, provided that s/he accepts the inevitable discomfort it entails.
